The United Nations Road Safety Week takes place every two years. This initiative analyzes current traffic problems worldwide, provides comprehensive information for individuals, businesses, and especially governments, and offers recommendations for action. This year, the program focuses on the safety of cyclists and pedestrians. We have summarized a few key points:

This is how cyclists and pedestrians are currently doing
- In 2023, cyclists and pedestrians together accounted for over 25% of all traffic fatalities.
- Particularly in Europe, the number increased by 50% between 2011 and 2020.
- Cyclists over 50 have twice the risk of serious injury compared to cyclists under 50.
- Depending on the region, pedestrians under 15 years of age or over 60 years of age are among the most vulnerable road users.
Cycling and walking would be fantastic for health, make cities more sustainable and society fairer.
Risk factors
Several factors have a particularly strong impact on the safety of cyclists and pedestrians. Here are a few examples:

for cyclists
- Lack of visibility, failure to use lighting
- Speed of motorized vehicles
- Driving under the influence of alcohol

for pedestrians
- Lack of pedestrian facilities
- Speed of motorized vehicles
- Poor visibility
It's clear that the speed of motorized vehicles – mostly cars – is a major risk factor. On the one hand, the government can make a big difference here with 30 km/h speed limits. On the other hand, cyclists and pedestrians are dependent on legislative action. There's not much they can do themselves . The necessary infrastructure also needs to be built by the government.
The lack of visibility refers both to street lighting and to lighting for pedestrians and cyclists. According to the WHO analysis, making oneself visible is a promising and demonstrably valuable way to reduce the risk of accidents.
